MAIN DETAILS
This course is for children in school years 3, 4, 5, 6. It runs over five weeks, with each weekly session lasting 2 hours, providing 10 hours of learning time. The sessions will run on Saturdays between 9.30am and 11.30am, on…………….. All Crafty Birds courses are held at Redborne Upper School, in Ampthill.
Your child will be taught by two friendly tutors, Anneka and Jessica. They will differentiate the learning during the course to ensure everyone feels confident and capable, as well as challenged, and able to make a good quality bucket hat.
At a children’s sewing course, Anneka and Jessica provide more help than they would at an adult’s sewing course. If your child is struggling, Anneka and Jessica will step in to support, and possibly complete a small section of sewing if this is what is needed to regain their confidence! So, do not worry if your child has little experience sewing, they will be supported all the way so that they are happy with what they make.

AIMS AND OUTCOMES
By the end of the five week course, your child will have made their very own fully functional, reversible bucket hat, in their choice of two breathable fabrics, perfect for sunny summer days!
During the course, your child will learn:
How to use a pattern (template) and understand the specialist markings and symbols
How to use the sewing machine and different tools and equipment used in sewing
Increase their confidence using a sewing machine, setting the dials and selecting the best stitch settings, and how to solve common problems,
How to construct accurate and strong seams
Various sewing processes such as application of interfacing, top stitching, and bagging out
To think logically-assembling various fabric pieces in a sequenced order
SIZING
Patterns (templates) are used to cut the fabric pieces out to make the hat. There are different patterns for different hat sizes, set by the head circumference. Please measure the circumference of your child’s head, positioning the tape measure around their forehead where the brim of the hat would sit.
You will need to specify their circumference on the booking form, so that the correct pattern is provided for them.
If you do not have a tape measure at home, please use these measurements which are based on your child’s age, and put this on your booking form. Age 5-6 years is 52cms, age 7-10 years is 54cms, age 11-13 years is 56cms.
YOUR DESIGN CHOICES
It is best to make a bucket hat with cotton fabric because cotton is breathable. Your child will use a woven, non stretch fabric because stretchy fabric is difficult to cut and sew and will be explored in later courses.
If you are booking either the Magpie or Flamingo kits, please ensure that your child brings sheeting or poplin fabric. Stretchy or satin/slippery fabric isn’t suitable. They will need to bring two different fabrics, one for the outside of the hat and one for the inside lining. Each piece needs to measure 50cm x 120cms.
If you are booking either the Parrot or Peacock kits, please browse the fabric options below for your child to choose their favourites. The hat will be made of two different fabrics; one for the outside and one for the inside lining. So, please choose two fabrics they like for the outside fabric, and two they like for the inside lining. Please state these four favourite fabrics when you book their place, and I will endeavour to provide their first choices. If this fabric runs out, I will provide their second choice fabric.
