You will use the sewing machines and overlockers in the studio during the course, but if you would like to bring your own machine to use, you are very welcome to. Scissors, pins, and other tools are all also available in the studio, but again, you may wish to bring your own kit.

On this course you will learn how to start your sewing hobby. You will be shown all of the equipment needed to get started, as well as how to set up the sewing machine and sew basic stitches that are used for most projects. You will be shown:

  • Useful tools to get started

  • Different fabric types and their names, and when they would be appropriate to use

  • How to thread up a machine

  • How to change the stitch settings on the machine and when you would need to do this

  • How to use the other dials and settings on the machine, such as tension, stitch length and width, among others.

  • How to sew neat, straight lines of stitching

  • How to sew basic seams and hems

  • How to sew in a basic zip

Aims and outcomes

The purpose of this course is to set you up with your new hobby so that you feel confident to start sewing at home. The skills included on this course are applicable to all sewing projects, including dressmaking, soft furnishings, and other textile items.

You will be making samples of hems, seams, and a zip insertion. All fabrics will be provided, you do not need to bring anything with you, other than a notebook to take notes.

If you are interested in making clothes, and would like to join the sewing course starting on the 17th April, it is recommended you complete this course first if you are a completely new sewist. On the 17th April course, new sewists would be advised to make the pyjama bottoms, which is a simpler project.
