This course is for children in school years 3 to 5, who would like to learn to machine sew for the first time, or improve their basic sewing skills.

mAIN DETAILS

The course runs over 4 weeks, with each weekly session lasting 1.5 hours, providing 6 hours of learning time. The sessions will run on Saturday mornings from 9am to 10.30am, starting on Saturday 4th February, with the final session on Saturday 24th February. All Crafty Birds courses are held at Redborne Upper School, in Ampthill.

During the course, your child will learn:

  • How to use templates to assemble seperate fabric components to create a 3 dimensional product

  • The names of different tools and machines used in sewing

  • How to sew various hand stitches

  • How to sew on buttons

  • How to thread a sewing machine

  • How to use a sewing machine to sew a straight stitch to construct a basic seam

  • The names of some fabrics and fibres and be able to describe how they look, feel, and drape.

AIMS AND OUTCOMES

By learning and applying all of these skills, your child will be able to create a cute, cube shaped animal made from felt, buttons, and stuffing, to take home and proudly display!

The skills they will learn are transferrable and useful in everyday life; sewing on fabric badges, replacing a button, and fixing a torn seam.

As well as learning the basics of sewing from which to build upon, your child will also enjoy being creative during the 4 week course, as they build their animal to their liking. They will be provided with a fabric pack including all the individual felt pieces required to construct their chosen animal, but will also have the freedom to adapt the design by adding or removing any other felt shapes.

YOUR DESIGN CHOICES

Please browse the below animal options with your child, as you will need to select the one they want to make at the checkout, when you book their place:
