Year 6 - 8 children's sewing class

  • Crafty Birds Flitwick Road Bedford, England, MK45 2NU United Kingdom (map)

This course is for children in school years 6 to 8, who would like to learn to machine sew for the first time, or improve their basic sewing skills.

MAIN DETAILS

The course runs over 4 weeks, with each weekly session lasting 2 hours, providing 8 hours of learning time. The sessions will run on Saturdays from 11am to 1pm, starting on Saturday 4th February, with the final session on Saturday 24th February. All Crafty Birds courses are held at Redborne Upper School, in Ampthill.

During the course, your child will learn:

  • How to assemble multiple fabric pieces of different shapes and sizes to create a 3 dimensional object

  • The names of different tools and machines used in sewing

  • How to thread a sewing machine and solve common problems

  • How to use a sewing machine to sew a straight stitch to construct a basic seam

  • The names of some fabrics and fibres and be able to describe how they look, feel, and drape.

AIMS AND OUTCOMES

By learning and applying all of these skills, your child will be able to create a 3 dimensional cushion in the shape of the initial letter of their name - or any letter they want to create!

This course has been designed as a building block to making clothes. Although the design of the cushion appears simple, joining multiple seams of different shaped fabrics is a complex skill. By completing this project, your child will develop their sewing skills ready to make clothes in later courses. With guidance during this project, your child’s confidence in sewing will grow.

YOUR DESIGN CHOICES

Please browse the below fabric pack options with your child, as you will need to select the one they want to use to make their letter cushion with at the checkout. Please note, there are limited amounts of each fabric pack available, so if your chosen one is not visible at the checkout, this means it has sold out and you will need to select another. If your child would like to bring their own fabric, please still select a fabric pack option, as they will need to use some prepared fabrics, and then I will help them to add in their own. Please ensure it is a sheeting or poplin style fabric made of either cotton or polyester. I would recommend one or two prints, one or two plains, and one or two spots or stripes. Each piece of fabric should be no smaller than 40x20cms.
